After a very successful production of “Aladdin” in 1996, the school thought of harnessing the school’s talent resource to help raise funds for charity. The 1st major community outreach by the school was conceptualized. Fresh from its debut in London, the school made an adaptation of this well-loved musical, turned it into a dance drama and staged it for one night at the International Convention Centre. The amount of B$15,000 was raised from ticket sales and was donated to the Dana Pengiran Muda Mahkota Al-Muhtadee Billah Fund for Orphaned Children. Present at the event was Her Royal Highness, Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna binti Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddin Sa’adul Khairi Waddien.
With the aim of promoting social responsibility and awareness, as well as to support the health campaign by the school, two charity events were organized. The 1stever walkathon was held along Jalan Gadong stretching from the Kg Jangsak campus to the Kg Mata-Mata Campus and back. The activity helped to raise funds for KACA, a non-profit organization which aims to improve the welfare of the children with disabilities in Brunei Darussalam who have not attended any formal coaching and mentoring. After the event, a mini sportsfest was held at the Multi-purpose Hall Scout Centre where volunteers from the Secondary students looked after the KACA children like a “big brother or sister” as they assist them during the novelty games. The activity succeeded in promoting understanding and compassion among the students especially to people with disabilities. During the event, office items such as a computer and printer, stationeries, toys, t-shirts and cap as well as swimming equipment were donated to KACA from the proceeds of the walkathon amounting to $5,027.22.
371 students and 26 teachers participated in a clean-up drive in Muara Beach as part of the school’s environmental awareness program. The event started with prayers and welcoming remarks followed by safety procedures from the teachers. Students as young as 9 and 10 years from Years 4 and 5 morning classes had their hands and feet dirty by picking up non-decomposing materials at the beach. After collecting bags of undesired rubbish and debris, the students cleaned up in time for games and the sharing of their experiences with each other.
A grand musical concert was held at the Jerudong Park Amphitheatre which featured a trilogy of Traditional Life in Brunei, Stories of Love and the Legend of Mulan. The concert generated $10,000 and the proceeds donated to DANA
Launched in June 2008, the 1000th tree was planted by HRH The Prince of Wales while the 1001st tree was planted by HRH The Crown Prince of Brunei. The project aims to have His Majesty the Sultan plant the 50,000th tree by 31st October 2009.
In response to this campaign, SM Sarjana school students, teachers and staff collected various amounts to purchase trees to support the Heart of Borneo project. Through the combined efforts of the school community, the school was chosen as one of those who collected the most amount of money. The highest collectors comprised of 36 students and assisted by 12 teachers were brought to the area on 3rd October 2008 to join in the actual planting of the trees in Badas together with representatives from various organisations.
The school in co-operation with the Brunei national Tug-Of-War Association and the Ministry of Education organized and held an indoor Tug-of-War tournament for Secondary Schools to promote the national sport. The school was requested to support the initiatives of the association and responded by spearheading the preparations as well as the running of the actual event. The activity also gave birth to the first Tug-of-War team in school. It was held at the PTE Katok Multi-purpose Hall on 31st January 2014.
Held at the Jerudong Park playground, the school added a twist in an ordinary activity by promoting and adding creativity in the way people exercise. Participants were encouraged to come up with their own non-motorised decorated “wheels” to ride, push or pull along the route. Hundreds of families came with colourful rides and toys all excited to roll. Collections from the activity amounted to $22,311.50 were donated to the Special Olympics and DANA with $11,155.75 per organization
The first ever donation to an organization outside Brunei was made possible through the school’s production, Peter Pan, the British Musical. Part of the proceeds from the license and royalty fee went to the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London. This is so far, the biggest production ever staged by the school, held at the Jerudong Park Amphitheatre in November 2011. Peter Pan the British Musical required a flying machine that was imported together with a coach from the US for special effects in the popular children’s story. Proceeds and was also donated to DANA Pengiran Muda Mahkota Al-Muhtadee Billah for orphaned children.
The Bahasa Melayu and IRK Department initiated Iftar Ramadhan for the orphans at the Stadium Restaurant with the theme “IFTAR JALINAN SILATURAHIM”. The event was co-organised by KatakIjau, a non-government organisation that has been very active in supporting the less fortunate families and orphans in Brunei. Green packets and hampers containing Hari Raya goodies were presented to 29 orphans in need right after the sungkai.
The devastation from typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines has left thousands homeless and trapped in their own areas. With the Brunei government facilities made available to transport donations from those who wants to help, the school made the three campuses as receiving points for donations for the typhoon Haiyan victims in the Philippines. After two weeks of campaign, Six (6) buses full mainly of food, drinks, laundry products and clothes were delivered to Pusat Belia from the contributions of the Sarjana community.
The school hosted two sporting events in June, generating a total of $6,752.00 in cash for Pusat Ehsan. Preschool Family Fun Day, which was held on the 8th of June raised a cash amount of $3,210.00 while the Primary and Secondary Charity Sportsfest held on the 12th of June came out with $3,542.00. The amounts were donations in cash and kind from students, parents, teachers and friends.
On the 12th of July 2014, the donations were handed over to Pusat Ehsan at their multi-purpose Hall. The donation comprised of one treadmill, a mobile treatment plinth and sports items that are necessary in upgrading the special needs centre’s Rehabilitation Unit.
