Three SMSS secondary students had the privilege in attending the launching of Climate Action Week, themed ‘Towards a Low Carbon and Climate-resilient Brunei Darussalam’, at the International Convention Centre (ICC) on Wednesday 22nd June 2022. The chosen students were Joshua Estrella Gatapia, Natasha Irene Low Jia li and Nur Nayyara binti Mohammad Azriman, all from the class of year 11D and was supervised by Teacher Sandhya Chandran. Our students joined the conference on which local and international representatives comprised of experts from several countries, including Japan, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam served as key-note speakers.

The topics discussed were the carbon market, electric vehicles, clean energy, nature-based solutions, climate resilient infrastructure and crops as well as research and innovation on adaptation and resilience. Apart from raising awareness, especially on the impact of gas emission from primary industries, the seminar and workshop also aimed to educate the public on climate action through reducing carbon emissions particularly those related to human activities. At the same time, it also aimed to increase green services such as installation of solar panels at home, complex, and primary industries.

The Climate Action Week has two sub-events – a conference and exhibition to be held until 25th June, while the Eco-Street Festival is scheduled to be held at Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex on 26th June. This was indeed a great experience as it provided our students with a lot of information about the different ways that can be done in order to reduce climate change.
